clear-shock-150South Sound FC won 2-1 against former Evergreen Premier League leaders Vancouver Victory FC last night in Lakewood putting them on top of the league.

It was a frenzied start to the first half as GK Chris Kintz was force to make two saves in the first three minutes of the game. The high intensity didn’t stop there with both sides fighting to maintain possession causing a few fouls and a yellow card for captain Micah Wenzel which will see him sit out of Saturday’s match on card accumulation. There were a few shots by Tyler John, a bicycle attempt by Micah Wenzel and a few more saves by GK Chris Kintz before anyone made it on the score board.

The first goal of the night came from JJ Schmeck in the 34’ with an assist by Vincent McCluskey. South Sound was up 1-0! Daniel Gray was shown yellow for a foul in the 35’ which will put him out with Micah Wenzel for Saturday and GK Chris Kintz had yet another save to deny Vancouver points on the board.

Vincent McCluskey scored the second goal for South Sound in the 41’ with an assist by Colton Ronk. The half would end with South Sound up 2-0!

Head coach Adam Becker only made one substitution at half, taking Daniel Gray off and putting Jay Hardy on.

The second half proved to be a fight to keep 3 points with GK Chris Kintz having to make multiple saves.  Vancouver’s Mikhail Wingate-Pearse did manage to put one of those shots in the back of the net in the 71’. Bringing the score to 2-1, South Sound still in the lead. Eddie Na had a beautiful run at goal in the 76’ pushing his way past multiple Vancouver defenders before having his shot deflected wide for a corner.

In the end South Sound held on to a 2-1 lead to win the game and push the club to the top spot in the league! This had the fans chanting “Which Place? First Place!”

Last night’s match is up on YouTube if you’d like to re-watch it. Big thanks to Mathias Gildemann for the live commentary!

The work is far from done. The boys need to win all remaining matches to keep themselves in contention to win the championship. Even if the club wins all remaining matches, Spokane Shadow yet again has the chance to take the championship on head-to-head points if they too win all of their remaining matches. Vancouver is far from out of this race as the top teams battle it out for first place. The push to the end of the season will be exciting and nerve racking. You don’t want to miss it!

Be part of the excitement as the boys push for the title. South Sound FC’s next home match is Saturday, June 27, 7pm at Harry Lang Stadium vs Yakima United FC.  We will be running a youth development clinic pre-game which starts at 4:30pm. If you have kids who want to join, you can sign them up here.
